FRIENDSWOOD — There were three area baseball players who were a part of the Major League Baseball amatuer draft held last week.
Drafted in Round 8 was former Friendswood standout Forrestt Allday who graduated from FHS in 2009. Allday was the 233rd overall pick by the Boston Red Sox.
Allday is a junior at Central Arkansas University and last year was named to the Southland All-Conference second-team.
This season, Allday hit a team-leading .365 including 14 doubles, 1 triple, three home runs, 36 RBIs, and 59 runs scored. He also stole 15-of-18 bases while working opposing pitchers for 55 walks. Central Arkansas was 44-22 overall this past season. He also had a .976 fielding average commiting only four errors.
Pearland's Blake Goins was drafted in Round 12 by the Los Angeles Angels with their 367th pick. Goins has signed to play baseball at the collegiate level for the Texas Longhorns. The senior pitcher is committed to getting an education at UT and playing for the 'Horns.
Manvel's Shane McCarley was taken by the New York Yankees as the 1,004th overall pick in Round 33. McCarley will continue his journey to play football at the next level for Old Dominion University. The record-setting All-State quarterback will put all of his focus on the gridiron in college.
Players who are drafted in the first round will have to make a serious choices since that is where most of the money will be offered.
Kohl Stewart of St. Pius X High School in Houston was the No. 4 overall pick in the first round by the Minnesota Twins. Stewart had committed to play football for Texas A&M, but MLB’s assigned value to the fourth overall pick is $4,544,400. Stewart let A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin know that he will not be playing for the Aggies.
