Friendswood set to face non-district schedule

FRIENDSWOOD — Friendswood has three non-district games to begin the 2017 football campaign and they easily disposed of two of them last season getting lopsided wins over the Texas City Stingarees 54-20, and the Kingwood Mustangs 58-20, but the weather ended up canceling the game against the Summer Creek Bulldogs.

Friendswood was leading Summer Creek 7-0 in the first quarter before storms and lightning rolled in that delayed the contest and eventually it was decided to cancel the game without trying to continue the game the next day.

The Mustangs will be on the road the first two games against Texas City (9/1) and Summer Creek (9/8) before hosting Kingwood (9/15) in the home opener. Friendswood will have an open date on 9/22 before District 24-6A action begins at Henry Winston Stadium on September 29 against Dickinson at 7:00 p.m.

Texas City Stingarees - September 1 - Away

Texas City didn't make the playoffs last year as they are in the same District 23-5A with area-powers Manvel, Fort Bend Marshall, Fort Bend Elkins, and Fort Bend Willowridge. They district also includes Ball High, Santa Fe, and Galena Park which don't figure in the playoff picture this season.

The Stings were 4-6 overall in 2016 and 3-4 in league play, but they do have six offensive and five defensive starters returning with 20 lettermen. They are considered a dark horse to make the post-season and could possibly upset a couple of district teams that would slide them into the fourth place slot to continue their season.

Summer Creek Bulldogs - September 8 - Away

Summer Creek was 5-4 last season overall and 3-4 in league play, but they didn't qualify for the post-season. However, they did notch a huge upset when they knocked off Dawson 47-34. But they couldn't overcome some of the stronger teams in their district.

The Bulldogs have one of the tougher leagues in the Houston area having to face North Shore, Atascocita, and Kingwood.

It appears that Summer Creek could move into the fourth slot this year to extend their season if they can get wins over Channelview, Baytown Sterling, C.E. King, and Baytown Goose Creek Memorial.

The Bulldogs have seven offensive and three defensive starter returning to go with 28 lettermen. They have a Division I quarterback, John Holcombe (6-4, 245), who already holds multiple FBS offers.

Kingwood Mustangs - September 15 - Home

Friendswood traveled to Kingwood last season and blew the Mustangs out 58-20 thanks to Friendswood's explosive offense.

Friendswood racked up 482 total yards as QB Tyler Page was 14-of-25 passing for 315 yards and 5 TDs while rushing for 86 yards on 18 carries and another score.

However -- the Mustangs don't have Page in the stable this season so Friendswood will be depending on some other offensive players to step up their effort if they are going to knock off Kingwood.

Kingwood was 6-6 last season overall and advanced to the 6A Region III Div. II area-round. They were 4-3 in district. The Mustangs have six offensive and eight defensive starters returning to go with 24 lettermen so they should be much more competitive this season when arriving at Henry Winston Stadium
