Mustangs come up short against George Ranch

FRIENDSWOOD — The No. 6 Class 5A state-ranked Richmond George Ranch Longhorns used a bruising ground attack and took advantage of a very weak Friendswood offensive effort including some miscues to easily hand the Friendswood Mustangs their first loss of the 2015 football season 29-6.

Friendswood was their own worst enemy as the offense was ineffective for most of the game. The Mustangs finished with only 214 total yards and were able to get just 94 yards in the firs half with six of their seven possessions going three-and-out.

George Ranch scored first on a four-play, 41-yard scoring drive capped off by a 27-yard touchdown by running back Alex Fontenot for a 7-0 lead with 3:41 left in the opening period.

The Longhorns scored early in the second quarter as running back Joshua Scruggs ran through the Friendswood defense for a 32-yard scoring run with 11:18 left for a 14-0 lead.

Midway in the second quarter, Friendswood tried to answer as quarterback Tyler Page got loose on a 37-yard run to put the ball at the George Ranch 9-yard line. But on the next play, running back Dylan Friske lost the handle on the ball that went into the end zone losing a chance to cut the deficit.

The Longhorns added another score with 8:22 left in the first half when Scruggs scored on a 25-yard run to bump the lead to 21-0.

With only 1:07 left before intermission, George Ranch picked up a safety for a 23-0 lead.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Longhorns pushed the lead to 29-0 with 7:21 left in the contest when Fontenot scored on a 1-yard sneak with the PAT missing the mark.

Friendswood was able to dodge a shutout when backup quarterback Ryan Epperson hit Reed Roher on a 13-yard scoring strike with only 2:40 left in the game. The PAT was no good and the 29-6 final score was posted.

Page was only 2-of-13 passing for nine yards while Epperson was 2-for-2 for 100 yards and a TD.

Page had 100 yards rushing on 19 carries while Mason Barnes had nine totes for 28 yards.

Roher had two catches for 55 yards and one score.

Friendswood will host the Kingwood Mustangs on Friday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Henry Winston Stadium.
