Friendswood falls to Kingwood

FRIENDSWOOD — It was wood against wood and Mustang against Mustang, but it was Friendswood who came up on the wrong side of the contest.

Injuries took their toll for Friendswood and they could not get back in the game against the Kingwood Mustangs.

Inside linebackersCasey Thurman and Trenton Lockwood fell to the injury bug in the first quarter and outside linebacker Gentry Chidester suffered a separated shoulder.

Sophomore quarterback Tyler Page also went out in the first half leaving last year's starter Brandon Sargent to step up in the second half. Sargent is a proven signal-caller and the senior stepped up to toss two touchdowns and was 9-of-23 for 114 yards with one interception.

Kingwood (1-2) scored first on a 41-yard run by Josh Gere with 6:41 left in the opening period.

Friendswood (2-1) immediately responded with a drive to the Kingwood 5 and settled for a 22-yard field goal by Blake King to cut the lead to 7-3.

Kingwood increased their lead to 14-3 with 8:40 left in the second quarter as Damon Young slipped through an opening for a 20-yard scoring scamper.

Just before the first half ended, Friendswood came up with a safety making the score 14-5.

Despite the injuries, Friendswood got back in the game as Sargent hit Tyrick Ramirez for a 4-yard scoring toss to cut the lead to 14-12.

But Kingwood scored two straight times on a 30-yard touchdown pass and a 25-yard field goal bumping up the lead to 24-12.

However, Friendswood wasn't going to go away as Sargent it King for a 31-yard scoring strike to close to 24-19 with 5:29 left in the game.

Kingwood sealed the game when Griffin Lay scored on a 5-yard run to post the 31-19 final score. The key play was a backbreaking 45-yard run by Young.

As has been the case for the first three games, senior running back Sam Longbotham has been the workhorse as he had 160 yards on 22 carries.

"I never doubted that our kids would battle, and they did," said Friendswood head coach Robert Koopmann. "Sam, we probably wore out just too much. We were just out of people."

Joey Crespo had three receptions for 39 yards and King had one catch for 31 yards and a score.

Friendswood has an open date on Friday, September 19.
