Mustangs stampede past Clear Brook 35-7

FRIENDSWOOD — There has always been a rivalry between the Friendswood Mustangs and cross-town Clear Brook Wolverines. Some games more intense than others.

The Mustangs used an aggressive defense and a consistent offense to take a 35-7 District 24-6A win to remain undefeated in league action at 3-0.

While the Friendswood defense was shutting down the offense of the Wolverines, sophomore quarterback Christian Lee was providing the leadership they needed to put points on the board and eventually get the win.

The Mustangs scored on the first drive of the game when Lee tossed a short pass to Ben Redding who used his elusiveness to cover 24 yards for the game's first touchdown and a 7-0 lead following the PAT by Sam Wittman.

With 7:33 left in the first half, Lee added a second touchdown pass, this time to sure-handed Nick Swaney covering 23-yards and a 14-0 lead.

The 'Stangs would go into the dressing room at intermission with a two touchdown lead after the defense shut out the Wolverines.

Clear Brook came out in the second half trying to get back into the game as they used a seven-play, 73-yard scoring drive capped off by running back Michael Norris who scored on a 2-yard plunge with 7:31 left in the third period to cut the lead to 14-7.

But that is a close as the Wolverines would get as the Friendswood defense shut them down the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, Friendswood answered when Redding took a reverse handoff, fought through numerous Clear Brook defenders to find the end zone on a crowd-pleasing 11-yard touchdown run with put the Mustangs up 21-7 with 2:43 left in the third.

On Friendswood's next possession, the writing was on the wall for Clear Brook as the Mustangs when on a 61-yard scoring drive capped off with a 5-yard scoring run by Mason Barnes for a 28-7 lead with 10:56 left in the fourth quarter.

The nail in the coffin occurred when a bad snap on fourth down by Clear Brook resulted in a 31-yard loss giving the ball to Friendswood at the Wolverines 12.

It took five plays for Lee to score on a quarterback sneak making the final score 35-7 in favor of the Mustangs.

Friendswood finished the game with 348 total yards, led by Lee going 15-of-23 passing for 215 yards, including 65 yards on the ground and three total touchdowns.

Barnes finished 132 total yards from scrimmage and Ben Redding led the receivers with five catches for 76 yards.

Friendswood (5-1 overall, 3-0 in district) will host Clear Creek on Friday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. at Henry Winston Stadium for Homecoming festivities.
