FRIENDSWOOD — After beginning the 2021 football season 0-4, the Friendswood Mustangs have put together a three-game winning streak to improve their season record to 3-4 with a solid 28-3 victory over the La Porte Bulldogs (1-6, 1-3). Friendswood is now 3-1 in district and tied for second place with Baytown Lee in the league standings. Port Arthur Memorial sits in first place at 4-0.
The Mustangs used a strong ground attack against La Porte led by running backs Caleb Corkran and Jackson Rhodes who combined 220 yards on 44 carries for two rushing touchdowns in the District 9-5A Div. I win.
Friendswood forced a fumble by La Porte on the opening drive of the game at the Bulldogs 35-yard line.
The Mustangs turned the miscue into a 3-yard score by Corkran and a 7-0 lead following the PAT by Pietro Pasqualli.
La Porte fumbled again on their second possession of the game at their own 42.
Once again, the Mustangs took advantage of the turnover and running back Braylan Shelby scored on a 3-yard run to the left side of the La Porte defense to make the score 14-0 at the 6:55 mark of the first quarter.
That would be all of the scoring in the first half for Friendswood while La Porte was able to get a 35-yard field goal by Levi Hilborn to cut the lead to 14-3 at halftime.
The Friendswood controlled the second half to shut out the La Porte offense while the Mustang offense scored once in each quarter.
The Mustangs blocked a field goal attempt by the Bulldogs in the third quarter. Aidan King picked up the ball and returned it 69-yards to the La Porte 31.
Rhodes converted the turnover with a 4-yard scoring run to increase the Friendswood lead to 21-3 after the Pasqualli PAT.
With 5:11 left in the game, Friendswood scored on a 5-yard touchdown by quarterback Matthew Dupuis to make the final score 28-3.
The final PAT following Dupuis' touchdown was booted by sophomore kicker Reagan Rudolph who made school history for becoming the first female to compete in a Friendswood varsity football game.
Friendswood will host Goose Creek Memorial at Henry Winston Stadium on Friday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m.
