Friendswood rolls past Porter 42-14

A lively homecoming crowd was treated to a crisp offense and a stellar defense as the Friendswood Mustangs put away Porter 42-14 at Henry Winston Stadium to keep their playoff hopes alive and improve their record to 2-3 in district and 3-5 overall.

“It has been a work in progress, and I think that makes a win against Porter even more rewarding, just watching our guys chip away at it, a game at a time and practice at a time,’’ Friendswood head coach Jordan Johnson said. “And I think we’re moving more into who we truly are as far as our capability goes.

“We have a long way to go as far as making everything matchup and playing sound football,’’ he added. “But I’m extremely proud of our players for the past two weeks they’ve put together.’’

Friendswood finds itself right in the thick of post-season contention. The Mustangs face an advantageous schedule in its final two contests against the bottom two schools in the league.

The Mustangs will complete its home schedule on Friday night against Kingwood Park before hitting the road on Saturday, November. 9 at Fort Bend Kempner with hopes of securing the No. 4 playoff slot.

Against the Spartans, the Mustangs established their no-huddle attack early and kept the pressure on the visitors, who had difficulty slowing down the run and pass.

Friendswood piled up 484 total yards (278 rushing, 206 passing) while logging 28 first downs.

Quarterback Mikey Butler registered touchdown passes to Garrett Muecke and Walker Winters while Josh Brister, who rotated in at QB, registered a pair of short TD runs and 5-yard scoring toss to Muecke.

Tripp Bateman’s 4-yard touchdown run made it 35-0 late in the third quarter after a fumbled Porter punt attempt was downed at the 4.

Defensively, the Stangs didn’t allow a Porter first down on an offensive snap until there were 40 seconds left in the third period. Nicholas Ruffeno picked off a pass and Friendswood’s front seven tormented the Spartans (2-4 in district), who managed just 117 total yards, most coming in the fourth quarter.

“I definitely thought we were more efficient in all areas,’’ Johnson added. “Defensively, I don’t know how you could be more dominant than we were tonight.’’

Johnson indicates that the Mustangs must focus on one game at a time and with two remaining, the playoff picture will take care of itself.
