Friendswood stings Alvin 40-16

FRIENDSWOOD — Friendswood freshman quarterback made his debut against the Alvin Yellowjackets and gave Mustang fans a great look for the future to go with sophomore quarterback Christian Lee.

With a playoff berth already secure, Friendswood was just playing their final game of the regular season while looking to pickup some momentum entering the post-season after the 24-0 loss to District 24-6A champion Clear Springs the previous week.

Not only did they get some momentum, but they also got some encouragement for the future as freshman Luke Grden came off the bench and led the Mustangs to a 40-16 win over the Jackets.

As expected, Grden had to fight through some early game jitters, but once he did, the flow of the game became his to shine.

The Friendswood defense kick started the offense when senior defensive back Josh Peterson intercepted an Alvin pass to set up the offense at the Jackets' 21.

It only took four plays before senior running back Mason Barnes darted 7-yards across the goal line for a 7-0 lead following a PAT by Sam Wittman at the 10:36 mark of the first quarter.

The score stayed 7-0 until junior Davis Tinger picked off a pass in the second period setting up the Friendswood offense at the Alvin 11.

Grden toss his first varsity touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Nick Swaney covering 8-yards for a 14-0 advantage.

After the Friendswood forced an Alvin punt, Grden hooked up with Swaney again for a 48-yard scoring bomb and a 21-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets finally got on the board with a 22-yard field goal making the score 21-3 at intermission.

The Mustangs scored first in the second half as Grden found junior Austin Alvarez for a 33-yard scoring strike to increase the lead to 28-3.

But the young gunslinger was finished as he pushed the Friendswood score to 35-3 when he threw a dart to Koleman Bell covering 20-yards for a touchdown.

Wittman would later add a 35-yard field goal to make the score 38-3.

Alvin scored a couple of times to make the score closer than what the game really was as the final scored ended up at 40-16.

Friendswood ended with 40 points after Khalil Lee-Bryant scooped up an Alvin blocked extra point and returned it 80-yards for two points.

Grden finished the game hitting 9-of-13 passing for 184 yards and four touchdowns.

Leading the ground attack was Barnes who had 13 carries for 190 yards and a score. Swaney had three catches for 77 yards and two TDs. Alvarez had three grabs for 61 yards and one score. Bell had three catches for 51 yards and one TD.

The Mustangs close out the regular season at 7-3 overall and will advance to the Class 6A Region III Div. II bi-district round to face the Dawson Eagles (6-3) at The Rig on Friday, Nov. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
