Friendswood's Stephen Peter named to TASCO Hall of Honor

Friendswood boys soccer head coach Stephen Peter has been coaching the Mustangs for 27 years. Peter has developed one of the state's top boys soccer programs as well as his wife, Laura, who coaches the Friendswood girls and won a Class 4A state title in 2001.

So to say the Peter family is committed to the sport of soccer is an understatement.

Coach Peter played soccer at Clear Lake High School and then played at the next level at Midwestern State University (1987-1990).

Coach Peter began his high school journey at Friendswood High School and for 27 years he has led one of the premier soccer programs to be found at the high school level.

The Texas Association of Soccer Coaches recognized his contributions to the sport and recently inducted him into their Hall of Honor.

Coach Peter's achievements are legendary and this is a well-deserved honor.

Over the span of his 27 years at Friendswood, there are many noted achievements by the teams that he has coached.

"I think that this honor means that I have had many great players and people come through the program over the years," said Peter. "Without them we, Friendswood, would not have had the success that we have had in the past and present. This award is a tribute to them as much as it is to me."

The Friendswood Mustangs soccer teams have won 18 district titles and one regional championship. The Mustangs have qualified for the playoffs in all 27 years with Peter as the head coach.

"The past players and teams had built such a strong tradition that every time we step on the field we are going to get our opponents 'A' game because it is one of their biggest games of the year," Peter said. "Whether it is a non district game, a district game, or obviously a playoff game.

"In 1996 when we made the regional tournament as a small 4A school in 5A soccer was a huge milestone in our programs history.

"The first year that there was 2 classifications in 1999 and we lost in the regional final in a shootout was also huge. In 2005 we started the season with 22 consecutive wins and then in 2012 winning the region was also a huge accomplishment. Every year brings different challenges for us as a program."

His coaching peers have named him District "Coach of the Year" 10 times and Peter was named Galveston "Coach of the Year" nine times by the Galveston Daily News.

Peter has also been named Region III "Coach of the Year" on two occasions and he was named the NSCAA Texas state "Coach of the Year" in 2012.

That same year, Peter was named the NSCAA Regional "Coach of the Year" and a National "Coach of the Year" finalist.

Peter's overall coaching record is 448-129-93 while posting a district record of 266-29-34.

He has served several positions of leadership with TASCO over a span of 11 years and has been a member of TASCO for 27 years.

"I thought that going into coaching and instilling my passion for the game into young people would be something special," Peter added. "Here we are going on 28 years of doing this."

Coach Peter is to be congratulated for such an esteemed honor and may he continue to find much success as he continues to the lead the Friendswood Mustangs soccer program.
