Texas City gets past Friendswood 62-52

FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Mustangs dropped their district opener to Texas City in a game that wasn't as close as the final score indicated.

The Mustangs were able to build a 12-7 lead after the first eight minutes, but then the Stingarees took over the game as they scored 11 unanswered points to begin the second period for an 18-12 lead.

It got worse as the game continued as Texas City outscored the Stangs 38-11 in the second and third quarters for a 45-20 lead.

While Texas City is not a very big team, they use their quickness and speed to their advantage which is what they did against Friendswood.

Driving layups, 3-pointers, and strong inside moves dominated the Mustangs. Texas City created 22 turnovers by Friendswood in the game and shut down the Friendswood offense.

Caleb Marburger, the Mustangs' coach, without hesitation, agreed, "We've had some trouble these last couple of weeks in those middle two frames. We've had some turnover issues, some engagement issues.

"Guys not making plays with the ball when they're in good position, making some terrible decisions."

Thomas Hamre topped Friendswood with nine points and Cole Kelly added eight points and eight rebounds.

Friendswood is 8-8 overall and 0-1 in league play.
