Friendswood slips past Galena Park 47-42

FRIENDSWOOD — Galena Park arrived in Friendswood with upset on their mind and looking for their first district win while Friendswood was determined not to be the first victim of the Yellowjackets.

However, it took a late offensive surge and a suffocating defense for the Mustangs to pull out the 22-5A win 47-42.

With less than four minutes to go in the game, Friendswood trailed 41-38 before the Mustangs went on a 5-0 run to take a 43-41 lead at the 3:41 mark of the final frame.

Galena Park (11-13, 0-3) got fouled and sank one free throw at the 3:01 mark to close the gap to 43-42, but Friendswood's defense would close the hole on the goal and outscore the visitors 4-0 down the stretch for the 47-42 district win.

Renyck Robertson and Ian Bivins both hit a free throw and Robertson scored on an inside layup to wrap up the scoring.

It appeared that Galena Park would run away with the game after they blew out the 'Stangs 13-3 in the opening quarter.

After the Jackets built a 19-9 lead midway in the second quarter, Friendswood finally got their offense untracked to go on an 11-3 run to cut the lead to 22-20.

Both teams scored at the end of the first half leaving the Jackets holding on to a 25-22 advantage at intermission.

Galena Park kept the offensive pressure on in the third quarter outscoring the Mustangs 8-5 for a 33-27 lead, but Friendswood rallied to close out the period with a 6-0 run sending the game to the fourth quarter tied at 33-33 thanks to a pair of treys by Thomas Hamre.

Friendswood closed out the final eight minutes 14-9 for the 47-42 victory.

Bivins led the offensive attack for Friendswood with 16 points and Hamre closed with 15 points.
