Friendswood 2 - Clear Lake 2
After a strong first half, the Friendswood Mustangs conceded a late goal to Clear Lake to come away from the District 24-6A match with a draw.
A.J. Buchman burned the Falcons’ defense in the 16th minute of the first half to give Friendswood a 2-1 lead, and Cory Thornton barely missed on a shot that would have made it 3-1 at the half.
Friendswood (8-0-4 in district) will try to keep its hold on first place in the 24-6A standings.
Friendswood 2 - Clear Lake 0
The Friendswood Lady Mustangs got big plays from their young defense and took advantage of a penalty kick opportunity to edge out the Clear Lake Lady Falcons 1-0 at Henry Winston Stadium.
The win avenges a 2-1 loss to Clear Lake in the first round of District 24-6A play, and puts the Lady Mustangs on the inside track for, at least, the district’s No. 2 playoff seed.
After a scoreless first half in which each team had their fair share of scoring chances, the tipping point of the match came 12 minutes into the second half, when Clear Lake (8-2-2) committed a handball penalty inside the 18-yard box, giving Friendswood a penalty kick opportunity.
Senior Erin Kaltenbaugh took the PK for the Lady Mustangs, but her shot was stopped by Clear Lake goalkeeper Sarah Grimmett. However, Grimmett was ruled to have moved early to give Kaltenbaugh a second chance, which she snuck into the bottom left corner of the net for the match-deciding goal.
