Friendswood girls win soccer playoff opener 6-0

FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood girls were once a state-power when they were in Class 4A, but it has taken a couple of years for them to get back to that status since being moved to Class 6A. But now they have once again become a force after winning the District 24-6A title this year.

The Lady Mustangs have notched their first 6A playoff victory after blanking Alief Hastings in the opening round of the Region III playoffs.

Obviously, the next achievement by head coach Laura Peter is to see her girls win the region and advance back to the state tournament where they were no strangers in 4A.

Olivia Rhodes scored the first two goals for Friendswood while Selina Vickery and Erin Kaltenbaugh were credited with the assists.

Friendswood took a 3-0 lead after Hayley Bowers scored and they Cami Rue added two more goals giving the Lady 'Stangs a 5-0 halftime lead.

Peter pulled most of her starters for much of the second half as Vickery scored the lone goal to make the final score 6-0.

"These girls have been able to get up for games most of the year," Peter said. "I think after our loss to Clear Springs, I've definitely seen a change in the focus, energy, and intensity."
