Friendswood diamondmen sweep Clear Brook 5-4, 5-0

FRIENDSWOOD — When Friendswood and Clear Brook face one another, the records don't matter as the competitive spirit of the cross-town rivals always rises to the top.

Clear Brook entered the game searching for their first district win while Friendswood was trying to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Friendswood grabbed an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first as Izaac Pacheco brought in a run with an RBI sacrifice fly and Jake Davis got an RBI bunt single.

The Wolverines cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second while Friendswood added another run in the fourth when Reid Nickerson stole home giving the Mustangs a 3-1 advantage.

Clear Brook tied up the game 3-3 with two runs in the top of the fifth and then took the lead 4-3 in the top of the sixth, but they could not stop the Mustangs in their final at bats in the bottom of the seventh.

With Pacheco at third base, Calvin Whitaker was called on to execute a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to tie up the game at 4-4. Payton Ditta then delivered the walk-off game winner when he singled in Johnnie Nemecek (2-for-3, 2 runs) for the 5-4 district win.

Bradley Wilcox started the game for Friendswood. He went four innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out six. Ryan Vera got the win in relief as he went three innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out three.

Friendswood pitcher Brandon Deskins allowed the Clear Brook Wolverines only one hit while striking out 14 and walking one for a complete game 5-0 shutout.

The game was close for the first three innings and then the Mustangs scored a run in the top of the fourth, fifth, and three runs in the sixth to put the game in their pocket at 5-0 leaving the Wolverines still searching for their first district win of the season.

Top hitters for the 'Stangs included Jake Davis who was 2-for-3 with one RBI that included a double. Calvin Whitaker was 1-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs. Payton Ditta was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
