Lady Mustangs blank Lady Oilers 3-0 to advance

FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Lady Mustangs shutout the Pearland Lady Oilers 3-0 to advance to the 6A Region III quarterfinals.

Senior midfielder Reid Kohls led the way for Friendswood scoring all three goals in the first half and then the Lady 'Stangs used their stingy defense to complete the shutout in eliminating the Lady Oilers from the post-season.

Friendswood scored two goals in the first eight minutes of the first half for a 2-0 lead.

"These girls have done a great job of coming out with intensity starting games since our last loss (March 1)," Friendswood head coach Laura Peter said.

Kohl scored her first goal in the 5th minutes after taking a shot on goal which bounced off a Pearland player. The aggressive Kohl responded with another shot that found the goal for a 1-0 lead.

In the 8th minute, Kohl got a cross-pass from Olivia Rhodes and fired a shot. The shot was saved, but the hustle by Kohl got the loose ball and fired past the Pearland goalie for her second score and a 2-0 Friendswood advantage.

Just before halftime, Kohl was the recipient of a beautiful pass from senior midfielder Selina Vickery that went between two Pearland defenders. Once Kohl got control of the ball, she was on a one-on-one battle with the Pearland goalie getting a shot for her third goal to complete the hat trick.

Friendswood sophomore Kenzie Weddel came up big in guarding the net for the Mustangs to complete the shutout. The Lady 'Stangs defense of Erin Kaltenbaugh, Rhiannon Suffield, Lexi Hudson, and Hannah Birsinger were instrumental in the shutout performance.

"It feels good because we are two steps past where we finished last year," Peter said. "Everything is a new step in 6A."
