Friendswood rallies for 10-7 win over Crosby


FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Mustangs picked up too crucial wins last week to place them in a strong position to advance to the post-season.

The Mustangs edged Ball High 7-6 and then beat a strong Crosby team 10-7 after falling behind twice in the district contest.

Against Ball High, the Mustangs built a 7-1 advantage before having to hold off the Tors whose comeback effort came up short leaving Friendswood with a 7-6 victory.

The game against Crosby was reversed at the 'Stangs fell behind to a 6-1 deficit.

In both games, shortstop Izaac Pacheco played an important role in helping Friendswood to both wins.

Against Ball High, Pacheco belted a three-run homer in the third inning and followed that with a run-scoring triple in the fourth.

Friendswood opened up the first inning with a run after Devon Andrews drew a one-out walk and scored on a two-out triple by Pacheco for a 1-0 lead.

Crosby responded with a pair of three-run innings in the bottom of the first and second for a 6-1 advantage.

But Friendswood got back in the game with a five-run top of the third to tie up the game at 6-6.

Garrett Leitko led off the frame with a single, and was driven home on Asa Ehrlich’s RBI double. An Andrews single put runners on the corners, and Spencer Beck hit an RBI sacrifice fly. Consecutive walks drawn by Pacheco and Bradley Willcott loaded the bases, and Kevin Newkirk’s grounder scored another run.

The biggest hit of the inning came when William Sweeney smacked a two-run double.

Crosby re-took the lead with a run in the bottom of the third 7-6, but Friendswood responded with two runs in the top of the fourth for an 8-7 lead.

Friendswood loaded the bases (Leitko, leadoff walk; Andrews, one-out walk; Beck, one-out hit by pitch) and two outs, Wilcott was hit by a pitch to force the game-tying run home, and then Newkirk hit an RBI single to put the Mustangs back in the lead.

The Mustangs added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. A leadoff walk to Jacob Valdez, a Leitko single and a balk put two runners in scoring position with no outs. After a fielder’s choice, Andrews brought a runner home on a groundout. Beck then delivered an RBI double for the final run of the game making the score 10-7.

Top hitters for Friendswood included Leitko (2-for-3, three runs, one walk), Beck (2-for-3, two RBIs) and Ehrlich (2-for-4, two runs, one RBI) combined for six of the Mustangs' 10 total base hits.
