Friendswood takes out Ball High 35-7

FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood offense rolled over Ball High for 504 total yards while the Mustangs defense held the Tors to 226 total yards for a solid 35-7 District 10-5A-I victory to keep Friendswood perfect on the season at 5-0.

One of the biggest challenges going to the Island is playing on the only real grass football field left in the Houston area. Kermit Courville Stadium is one of the most archaic stadiums still remaining.

"Since it's rained every day for the past five weeks, who knows what we'll encounter," Friendswood head coach Robert Koopmann said. "I know my yard at home is rotten because of the rain."

The last time Friendswood face Galveston on the Island was in 2013 when the Mustangs blew them away 51-6.

While Ball High has improved from 2013, the results were still the same as Friendswood used a potent passing attack to get a 35-7 district win.

Neither team could generate much offense in the first quarter, but the Mustangs got on track in the second period as sophomore quarterback Luke Grden found his passing touch to fire three scoring strikes for a 21-0 lead at intermission.

With 8:56 left in the second period, Grden tossed a 26-yard scoring pass to Christian Lee for a 7-0 lead after Austin Alvarez booted the PAT.

Grden then hooked up with Alvarez twice on 14 and 11-yard scoring strikes for a 21-0 lead at intermission.

The first scoring pass from Grden to Alvarez capped off an 86-yard drive.

Both teams scored a touchdown in the third quarter when Colton Halata rushed for a 6-yard touchdown with 7:02 left to push the lead to 28-0.

Ball High finally scored on a 31-yard pass from Martavian Jackson to Nigel Lee to cut the lead to 28-7.

But Friendswood nailed the game shut with 9:55 left in the final frame when Grden hit his fourth touchdown pass to Halata covering 8-yards for the 35-7 final score.

The Tors had several big plays to build some momentum to challenge the Mustangs, but each time the tough Friendswood defense would rise up to the occasion to shut the Ball High offense down.

Grden was 24-of-36 passing for 326 yards and four TDs.

Halata was the leading ball carrier with 155 yards on 22 carries and one catch for one TD.

Alvarez had 10 grabs for 115 yards and two scores while Lee had six catches for 103 yards and one score.

Friendswood will get their real district test on Friday, October 12 at Henry Winston Stadium when they host the Foster Falcons at 7:00 p.m.
