Friendswood boys capture district cross county title; girls place second


FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood boys and girls teams each qualified for regional competition at the District 24-6A cross country championship meet held at League City’s Chester L. Davis Sportsplex.

Led by senior Tyler Melebek's first-place finish with a time of 15:38, the Mustangs boys team won the district championship.

Also turning in top-10 times to boost the Friendswood boys team to the win were sophomore Samuel Thomas (fifth place, 16:15.37), junior Garrett McGregor (sixth place, 16:17.07) and sophomore Andrew Camp (eighth place, 16:22.22).

On the girls’ side, the Lady Mustangs finished second to Clear Lake at the district meet to earn a trip to the regional championship.

Friendswood’s girls team was led by junior Emily Wilbanks (sixth place, 19:22.51), freshman Olivia Theall (10th place, 19:37.34) and sophomore Rhianna Spong (12th place, 19:59.58).

The Region III-6A championship cross country meet is scheduled to be held Saturday at Kate Barr Ross Park in Huntsville.
