Lady Mustangs come up short of state tournament

FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood girls volleyball team made a valiant effort to advance to the Class 5A state tournament, but ran into a very good Kingwood Park team who defeated the Lady 'Stangs 25-21, 24-26, 25-21, 25-17, but it wasn't without a battle.

Kingwood Park lost in the region final last year to come up short of their drive to state so they know the disappoint that the Friendswood girls are feeling.

This is the deepest playoff run for Friendswood since the last time they were in 5A back in 2013, when Friendswood made it to the state semifinals.

Friendswood finishes the season at 33-16 and were crowned district champions with a perfect 14-0 mark.

The Lady Mustangs reached the region finals after they beat the 2017 Class 5A Region III defending champion Leander Rouse Lady Raiders 25-18, 25-16, 15-25, 19-25, 15-7 in the Region III-5A semifinals. Rouse was the 2017 state runner-up in Class 5A.

The Lady Mustangs graduate five seniors who will be greatly missed. They are MB Nicole Scott, OH Lauren Hubbard, S Haley Hubbard, RS Hayden Carroll, and OH Elle McGown.

But Friendswood is still a young team and key players such as MB Makensy Manbeck (junior), OS Ashlyn Svoboda (sophomore), S Tori Weatherly (junior), and libero Kate Bueche (freshman) should provide the talent and experience to be back in the hunt next season.
