Mustangs win district and soccer playoff opener

FRIENDSWOOD — Friendswood fell in the first round of the Class 6A Region III playoffs last year and the Mustangs were determined that wasn't going to happen again this season.

The Mustang boys joined the Friendswood girls in sweeping the District 24-6A crown this year to return to one of the area soccer powers.

Fort Bend Travis took an early 1-0 first half lead, but the Mustangs fought back as Friendswood senior Moodi Adawin answered with a score in the 27th minute to tie up the contest 1-1 which stood at halftime.

But the second half belonged to the Mustangs as A.J. Buchman scored a goal in front of the Travis net in the 9th minute giving Friendswood a 2-1 lead.

"They kind of took it to us for the first 25 minutes," Friendswood head coach Stephen Peter said. "I guess the nerves got the best of us. We weathered the storm and only gave up one. It was a brand new ballgame in the second half, a 40-minute game basically."

Friendswood goalie Mason Hunnicutt was one of the real stars of the game as he battled shot-after-shot from the Travis offense. He turned away the shots on goal, free kicks, and corner kicks to protect the Friendswood lead.

Brian Cassady shot a free kick in the 21st minuted which was blocked, but Jared Bouslog alertly got the loose ball in the net for the Mustangs making the final score 3-1.

"At halftime, we talked about coming out and playing like we are capable of playing," Peter said. "The kids just played and we move on."
