Channelview eliminates Friendswood from soccer playoffs

FRIENDSWOOD — The Channelview Falcons ended the season for the Friendswood Mustangs with a close 2-1 victory in the Class 6A Region III playoffs.

Friendswood had the wind to their back in the first half and had the most shots on goal, but they just couldn't find the back of the net as the first half ended in a 0-0 tie.

“I don’t know why we came out flat for the second game in a row in the first half,” Friendswood head coach Stephen Peter said. “They took it to us in the second half, and we were on our heels in the first half.”

Friendswood had their chances in the opening 40 minutes as senior midfielder Trey Brittenum had a header sail just over the top crossbar. In the 31st and 33rd minutes, senior midfielder Moodi Adawin and Brittenum fired shots on goal that were stopped by the Channelview goalie keeping the game scoreless.

The Mustangs got on the board first in the second half when A.J. Buchman fired a goal from 40-yards out in the bottom right corner of the goal in the 2nd minute.

However, Channelview answered in the 26th minute to tie up the game at 1-1. The Falcons scored the game-winner in the 37th minute for a 2-1 lead.

The Mustangs were able to score in the 7th minute when senior midfielder Jared Bouslog found the net off a pass from Cory Thornton, but Bouslog was called for offsides to negate the goal that would have given Friendswood a 2-0 lead.

“We finally settled down in the second half and got a goal 2 minutes in and thought we had a second one,” Peter said.

“Our guys played hard, and it was a good season,” Peter said. “We got our first 6A district championship, first 6A playoff win last week, and they set some standards that teams in the future will need to surpass.”
