April 15, 2014
FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood girls continue to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot as the regular season comes to a conclusion. So far, Santa Fe and Dawson have wrapped up their place in the post-season while the Lady 'Stangs should advance this season. They are 9-3 after their wins over the Lady Stingarees and Goose Creek Memorial.
Courtney Weber picked up the 10-2 win over Texas City in the pitching circle after allowing only four hits while striking out five.
It must have been doubles night as Kaylee Barnes, Madison Hughes, Julianna Tinger, Weber, and Brittany Woods all hit two-baggers.
Angela Fancett added a roundtripper to the multi-base parade for the Lady Mustangs.
Friendswood got a pair of runs in the top of the first for a quick 2-0 lead, but Texas City answered with a couple of runs of their own to knot up the game at 2-2. But that would be all the runs the Lady Stings would get as Weber shut them down the rest of the way while the Lady Mustangs offense continued to gain momentum.
The Lady Mustangs got a run in the top of the third and then exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 8-2 commanding lead. Fancett set the pace with an early solo home run in the five run fourth.
Two more runs in the top of the sixth closed out the game 10-2.
Savannah Hartman was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Olivia Jackson was 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Barnes was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Woods was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Fancett was 1-for2 with one run scored and one RBI. Weber was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Tinger was 1-for4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Friendswood 3 - GC Memorial 2
Friendswood picked up a crucial 3-2 win over Goose Creek Memorial that reserved their place in the post-season. GC Memorial, who upset Dawson 12-10 to keep their playoff hopes alive, couldn't pull off a second straight upset.
The game belonged to Courtney Weber who pitched and hit her team to the win. Weber limited Memorial to only four hits and a pair of runs including three walks and four strikeouts.
It was at the plate that Weber really stood out going 3-for-4 while belting three doubles and picking up one RBI.
GC Memorial scored a run in the top of the first and Friendswood matched that with a run in the bottom of the second. The score remained tied through seven frames and sending the game into an extra inning.
Memorial took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth, but the Lady 'Stangs responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eight to get the clutch 3-2 win.
Kaylee Barnes would punch a single with the bases loaded and the game tied 2-2 to give Friendswood the big win.
Friendswood banged out 11 hits for the game as Barnes was 3-for-3 with the game-winning RBI. Abbey Hayford was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Olivia Jackson was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
