Manvel dominates All-District selections

MANVEL — It came as no surprise that the Manvel Mavericks would dominate the 2017 All-District 23-5A picks after winning the district championship, the Class 5A Region III Div. I crown, and advancing to the 5A Div. I finals. The Mavs lost a heartbreaker 53-49 to the 5A Div. I defending champion Highland Park Scots in the final minute of the state title game.

Despite the loss, it was another banner year for the Mavs who closed out the season at 14-1. It was also a special season as Manvel head coach Kirk Martin won his 100th game when the Mavs thrashed the Elkins Knights 62-7 in the sixth game of the 2017 season.

Martin was selected as the 2017 23-5A "Coach of the Year" and now has a 108-25 mark at Manvel.

Under Armour All-American senior Jalen Preston was named the 23-5A MVP. The Texas A&M commit is one of the greatest all-around athletes that has ever put on a Manvel uniform in multiple sports.

Manvel senior quarterback Kason Martin shared Offensive MVP honors with Marshall sophomore running back Devon Achane.

Manvel senior linebacker DePriest Taylor, who was named Defensive MVP in the state finals, shared that district honor with Texas City junior outside linebacker Mykahl Brow.

Offensive players named to the first-team for Manvel included: junior RB Ladarius Owens, junior fullback Garrison Johnson, senior center Lance Jones, senior offensive linemen Joseph Solomon and Jalen Momerelle, senior WR Kam Scott, junior WR Warren Laster, and sophomore kicker Luis Moreno.

Named to the offensive second-team included: senior RB Deneric Prince, and senior offensive lineman Stephen Shaw.
