MANVEL — The 2011 football season marked the greatest year in Manvel's young history. It was a year of first-evers. The Mavericks finished the regular schedule with a first-ever undefeated season at 10-0. The Mavs caputued a first-ever District 24-4A and 4A Division I Region III championship.
Manvel also won their first-ever state semifinal contest while advancing to their first-ever 4A Div. I state championship. The only thing the Mavs didn't do was win the state title while finishing with a sparkling 15-1 overall mark.
Aledo edged Manvel 49-28 for their third-straight state championship so the Mavs have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of in 2011. Competing at the varsity level for only four years -- the Mavs have risen to the top as one of the elite teams in the state.
Head coach Kirk Martin welcomed his players who made their choices to continue their education and playing careers at the next level. They are:
Taiwan Johnson (Arkansas), Glynn Cheeks (Air Force), Christian Chamagua (SMU), Simon Curiel (Air Force), Taylor Romero (SE Louisiana), Julian Walker (Citadel), Corey Seymour (Southwestern Oklahoma), Gage Shipley (Kilgore JC), Effrum Webber (Blinn JC), Kaylon Melancon (Stephen F. Austin), and Ashton Bennett (Evangel College).
Mavericks move up to 5A and new district
Every two years, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) realigns Texas high school athletic and scholastic programs into new districts because of growth or decline of school enrollments.
When Manvel High School opened, the enrollment of the school met the numbers to compete in Class 4A. Those numbers held true over the past four years, but the growth of Manvel High School has now moved the numbers up to Class 5A status.
Manvel and Alvin High School will both be in Class 5A and have been placed in District 22-5A with Pasadena Dobie, Pasadena High School, Pasadena Memorial, Pasadena Sam Rayburn, Pasadena South Houston, and Pearland High School. This will begin when school starts in August, 2012.
Alvin moves from District 24-5A and Manvel moves from District 24-4A. They will now compete in the same district in all athletic and academic activities.
