Manvel ends playoff hopes for Pearland 53-49

MANVEL — The game between Pearland and Manvel had the entire season in the balance. One would continue in the post-season, the other would hang up their shoes for next year.

It was also a game in which the Mavericks were looking to avenge a lopsided 74-46 loss to the Oilers in the first round at home.

Pearland totally dominated the game against the Mavs and returned home with a convincing victory.

But that win was a little deceptive as the Mavs were playing without their star sophomore Jalen Preston and he proved to regenerate their effort as a difference maker the second time around.

The first quarter was close until the Oilers surged ahead 16-12 at the end of the first eight minutes of action.

But Manvel cut the lead by taking the second period 14-11 leaving Pearland clinging to a 27-26 lead at intermission.

Preston proved to be the difference maker in the second half as the Mavs took the third quarter 12-9 giving them a slim 38-35 margin entering the final quarter.

Manvel closed out the game 15-13 to take the 53-49 victory to secure their place in the playoffs while ending the season for the Oilers.

Pearland's Javen Hedgeman led the offense for the Oilers with 13 points while John Deterville added 11.

Preston got help from Jason Scott who scored 11 for Manvel.

Manvel advances to the bi-district round to face Deer Park. The game was played on Tuesday (late).

Dawson finishes as the District 22-6A champion and South Houston is the No. 2 seed. Pasadena Dobie and Manvel tied for third place, each with 10-6 records.

Pearland misses the playoffs in consecutive years for only the second time in head coach Steve Buckelew’s lengthy career at the Oiler helm, finished fifth with a 9-7 mark.
