MANVEL — The Manvel Lady Mavericks turned a relative close game in the first half to a statement win in the second half with a 62-44 win over the Friendswood Lady Mustangs in a 5A Region III area round contest.
With three minutes left in the second period, Manvel went on a 3-point spree by Jordyn Marshall and Jade Miller to build an 11-point lead with three long-range shots hitting the mark.
But Friendswood found a friendly free throw line hitting 12-of-15 to score the final six points of the first half to cut the lead to five points.
However, the third quarter belonged to the Lady Mavs as their suffocating defense held Friendswood scoreless for close to five minutes while Manvel built a 51-32 lead entering the final quarter.
Friendswood attempted a comeback with 12 points in the final eight minutes, but Manvel was able to stay with the Lady Mustangs with 11 points to get the 62-44 playoff win.
The Lady Mustangs overcame early game turnovers by hitting 8-of-8 free throws while the Lady Mavs were cold beyond the 3-point arc going 0-for-5.
But the offensive nerves finally settled for Manvel who hit 3-of-4 treys and finished the game with eight 3-pointers with Marshall putting in five of those as part of her 23 game-high points.
Friendswood's Ashlyn Mason led the offense for the Lady Mustangs with 14 points, but she was able to only score three points in the second half when the Friendswood offense went cold.
Sami Page was the only other Lady Mustang player to hit double figures with 11 points.
The difference in the game was the third quarter when the Lady Mustangs went scoreless on their first 11 possessions, turned the ball over seven times, and missed five shots before Mason finally found a basket with 2:48 left in the period.
Manvel scored 12 unanswered points during that span to build a 40-23 lead.
Despite the disappointing loss, the Lady Mustangs (23-8) still had a very successful season as they captured the District 22-5A championship with a perfect 14-0 mark.
