Manvel boys capture Class 6A Region III track championship


MANVEL — Most high school track experts seem to agree that the most talented track and field athletes in the state is located in the Greater Houston area and the Class 6A competitors.

Manvel certainly proved they have a talented team as they scored 72 points to capture the Class 6A Region III crown and they are talented enough to make a serious run at the Class 6A state championship.

The Mavericks captured the 6A Region III championship by scoring 72 points to grab the title over second place Houston Strake Jesuit who scored 62 points. Rounding out the top out of 30 area teams included Port Arthur Memorial (56), Houston Lamar (42), Katy Seven Lakes (32), Cypress-Falls (31), Katy Morton Ranch (26), Houston Davis (25), Alief Taylor (22), and Langham Creek (21).

The following Manvel athletes advanced to the state track meet, to be held at Mike Meyers Stadium on the University of Texas campus. They are:

Deontay Anderson who placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 20.08.

Howard Fields III won the 400 meters in 47.4.

Joshua Martin captured the 800 meters in 1:55.43.

The 1600 meter relay quartet of D’Vaughn Pennamon, Reggie Hemphill, Joshua Martin, and Howard Fields won the gold in 3:15.26.

Manvel head coach Kendrick Crumedy also stated that he has two other relay teams that could qualify for the state track meet that would increase Manvel's changes to capture a first-ever state track crown.

The 800-meter foursome of Reggie Hemphill, D’vaughn Pennamon, D’Eriq King, and Deontay Anderson placed third (1.25.88) at regionals and are waiting to see if the get the wild card bid to run at state meet. The Mavs were only .04 seconds behind second place Houston Davis.

The 400-meter relay team of Reggie Hemphill, D’Vaughn Pennmon, Jaren Colbert, and Deontay Anderson are also awaiting to see if they got the wild card bid. They finished third in 41.42.
