Manvel, Shadow Creek compete at state track meet

MANVEL — The state track meet was a little different as compared to the past three years when the Manvel boys won the state championship in 2015 (6A) and 2017 (5A) and were state runner-ups in 2016 (5A).

This year, the boys had only one state qualifier and that was senior CeCori Tolds who competed in the 5A long jump. However, Tolds scored eight points for the Mavericks to claim a silver medal with his second-place finish with a leap of 23-7.75 to finish behind state champion Alex Loving from Amarillo who finished with a leap of 23-10.25.

The Manvel girls also had a silver medalist as freshman Sydnee Williams placed second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.35. Junior Simone Watkins of Frisco barely edged Williams with a winning time of 14.05.

Shadow Creek senior Hailey Pollard finished second in the Discus with a throw of 144-04 for the silver medal and she finished seventh in the Shot Put with a heave of 38-03.25.

The Lady Mavs also ran in the 4x400 relay with the quartet of Rayah Wynn, Taylor Harvey, Thurneisha Keys and Ja'Daisia Sims where they placed sixth in 3:53.98.

Shadow Creek qualified in the 1x400 relay with the foursome of Ajai Sample, Daija Reese, Demetria Phipps, and Celisa Cook and they placed eighth with a time of 48.46.

The Shadow Creek boys 4x400 relay team also qualified at state but were disqualified. That foursome was Kelechi Iroegbu, Axel Cruz, Jerald Thompson, and Jor'Tavion Carmack.
