Manvel advances to 7-on-7 state semifinals
MANVEL — Manvel has always been one of the strongest teams at the state 7-on-7 tournament and this year was no different. The Mavericks have appeared at the state tournament in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.
In 2012, Manvel fell to Plano 45-28 in Division I finals and then came up short in the 2015 Division I finals to Austin Westlake 42-34 in double overtime.
Once again, Manvel made another strong run in the 7-on-7 tournament as they advanced to the championship bracket and to the state semifinals in Division I.
The Mavs opened up the tournament in a four-team pool and posted a 2-1 mark with wins over Southlake Carroll (47-33) and Abilene Cooper (28-14), but came up short against Crowley (42-34) which still sent them to the championship bracket.
In their quest to win a state title, Manvel opened with a win over Cy-Fair 32-19. They then beat Plano East 46-25 and Lovejoy 33-30 before coming up short against eventual state champion College Station 34-32 in the state semifinals. College Station edged A&M Consolidated 20-19 in the finals.
