No. 2 Manvel faces challenging non-district schedule

MANVEL — Manvel is a pre-season No. 2 state-ranked Class 5A team and they have high hopes for the season, but they will be tested early and in district as they seek to win the district championship.

Manvel returns 12 starters, including seven on defense. That unit will be led by senior linebacker Justin Medlock, who is committed to Miami. Senior defensive back Collin Wright and senior defensive end JP Deeter are returning All-State players.

The Mavericks’ offense boasts a two-pronged attack at running back as seniors De’Monte Seymore and Ty Harris collected more than 1,000 yards apiece last season. Senior offensive lineman and Houston commit Tevin Shaw will lead the way in the trenches.

The non-district schedule should prepare them for district competition when the real season begins.

Dickinson Gators
Friday, August 27
Gator Stadium at 7:00 p.m.

Dickson finished the 2020 season 5-3 with a trip to the bi-district round in the playoffs where they lost to Dawson 35-19.

The Gators return six offensive and six defensive starters with 20 lettermen that should return them to the District 24-6A throne room.

The offensive line will be their strength led by OL P.J. Williams (6-4, 255), OL Micah Barnett (6-2, 250) and TE Donovan Green (6-4, 225). Green is considered one of the top prospects in the nation as he caught 26 passes for 456 yards and 4 TDs last season.

Sophomore QB Duece Solomon (5-9, 200, 4.8) and senior QB Like Martin will battle for the starting signal-caller job while ATH Reggie Sanders will be an electric force when he touches the ball.

Dickinson will also have a fast and aggressive defense led by LB Layden Roque (5-10, 185, 4/7) who had 51 tackles and 2 sacks last year. He will get strong from DB Kolby Harris (5-10, 170, 4.6) and LB Tyree Woods (6-1, 225, 4.8).

Other key defensive players include DB V.J. Glover (6-0, 170, 4.6), DL Tre Ford (6-0, 205, 4.8), DL Dereiaz Wilson, LB Kristian Mukabana, DL Jason Caldwell, and DB Jabari Ellison.

Prediction: Manvel 21 - Dickinson 17

Crosby Cougars
Friday, September 3
Freedom Field at 7:00 p.m.

Crosby had a banner season last year with a 12-4 record and an appearance in the Class 5A Div. II state championship game only to fall to Aledo.

Graduation hit the Cougars hard as they only have three offensive and three defensive starters returning with 25 lettermen.

The offense will be led by WR Kameron Kirkwood (6-1, 180) who had 28 catches for 519 yards and 9 TDs last year. QB Cyrin Myles (5-11,175) will step in to direct the offense after seeing limited duty last year with 266 yards passing for 2 TDs and 188 yards rushing for 3 TDs in a backup role.

OL Demetrius Strahan (6-5, 315) and OL Braden Wright return to anchor the offensive line along with TE/DL Matthew Jordan (6-2, 220).

Add RB Quincy Jones, QB Kade Eudy (6-1, 150), WR Braden Womack, WR Brian Samuel, and WR Kristian Roberson to the offense.

The defense will be led by district MVP DL McCoy Casey (6-1, 250) who had 127 tackles, 24 TFL and 4 sacks last season.

Others on the defensive side are DL Chancellor Bradley, and LB Vincent Pulido.

Prediction: Manvel 28 - Crosby 14
