Manvel cruises past Clear Lake 34-6

MANVEL — It took a little while for Manvel to get untracked, but once they did, the Clear Lake Falcons were no match for the Mavericks.

Manvel's defense kept the game under control until the offense could gain some momentum and take over the game.

Clear Lake managed a 31-yard field goal with 5:23 remaining in the first quarter for a 3-0 lead.

But that all changed in the second period as Manvel scored 20 unanswered points for a 20-3 lead at intermission.

With 10:36 in the second quarter, Jordon Vaughn scored on a 3-yard scamper. Antonio Rodriquez added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

After getting a Clear Lake turnover following the ensuing kickoff, Manvel struck again on a 23-yard pass from Tucker Yarbrough to Jalen Paxton to make the score 13-0 after the PAT was no good.

Manvel added one more score before intermission when Yarborough hit Zion Johnkins on a 17 yard scoring strike. Rodriguez booted the PAT for a 20-3 advantage at halftime.

The Mavs scored once in the third quarter on a 37-yard scoring strike from Yarbrough to junior Jalen Walthall at the 10:03 mark to increase the lead to 27-3 following the PAT by Rodriguez.

Clear Lake got a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter to cut the margin to 27-6, but the Mavs put the nail in the coffin in the fourth frame when Johnkins hauled in a 27-yard scoring pass from Yarbrough with 8:34 left in the non-district contest making the score 34-6.

Yarbrough was 24-for-39 passing for 281 yards, four TDs, and one INT.

Walthall led all receivers with 8 catches for 95 yards and one score. Johnkins had 7 grabs for 90 yards and two TDs. Paxton had four catches for 41 yards and one TD.

The Manvel defense held the Falcons to only 170 total yards with 37 yards on the ground on 37 attempts.

Manvel will host the Crosby Cougars on Thursday, September 5 at Freedom Field at 7:00 p.m.
