Manvel thrashes Pasadena Dobie 75-7

MANVEL — It wasn't pretty for the Pasadena Dobie Longhorns after facing the Manvel Mavericks. When the final buzzer sounded, the Mavs had trounced the 'Horns 75-7.

Former longtime Pearland assistant/offensive coordinator Mike Norman, who is the new head coach at Dobie, was still left looking for his first win of his coaching career. Dobie is now 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in district after losing their district opener to Pearland 35-0.

Manvel scored at will and the score could have been worse as Manvel head coach Kirk Martin took out the starters after the first half and put the game on cruise control.

The Mavericks led 20-0 after the first quarter and 48-7 at intermission.

Dobie didn't help their own cause as they lost 2-of-4 fumbles that were turned into scores while the Manvel offense literally ran roughshod over the smaller Dobie squad.

Manvel (2-1, 1-0) racked up 557 total yards while holding Dobie to only 94 total yards including just 12 yards on the ground.

Sam Smith put Manvel on the board first with a 5-yard driving run. The PAT missed the mark giving the Mavs an early 6-0 lead.

The Mavs increased the lead to 20-0 in the first when QB D'Eriq King scrambled for a 16-yard scoring run and then he tossed a 20-yard scoring strike to Caleb Blanton with 3:38 left in the first period.

The lopsided contest continued in the second quarter as Manvel racked up 28 more points before halftime.

Blanton got his second scoring pass from King with 10:35 left in the second and Sean Dykes caught a 7-yard scoring pass from King with 6:57 left in the second.

Martin inserted back-up QB Kyle Trask, a Florida Gator commit, and he promptly tossed two aerial scores covering 20-yards to Jalen Preston and 10-yards to Blanton for his third TD grab of the game.

Dobie managed to score with 7:24 left in the second quarter on a nice drive to make the score 27-7, but that would be the closest the 'Horns would get the rest of the game.

Manvel's reserves took over the second half and still put up 17 more points on the board.

D'Vaughn Pennamon scored on a 2-yard run and Brandon McCarty bulled his way for a 6-yard score in the third.

Matthew Goodson found the end zone in the fourth on a 3-yard run and then the Mavs blocked a punt with seconds left in the game that bounced in the Dobie end zone. A mad scramble resulted in a touchdown b Alex Vega who blocked the punt making the final score 75-7.

King was 10-of-14 passing for 196 yards and three TDs while rushing for 22 yards on three carries and another score. Trask was 9-of-12 for 128 yards and two TDs.

McCarty had 74 yards rushing on 13 carries and a TD. Pennamon had seven totes for 56 yards and a TD.

Deidreque Anderson had two catches for 77 yards. Keylon Stokes had three grabs for 77 yards. Blanton had three catches for 43 yards and three scores. Preston had two catches for 41 yards and one TD. Reggie Hemphill had two catches for 33 yards. Dykes had four grabs for 21 yards and one TD.

Manvel will host the Pasadena Eagles on Friday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. at Alvin Memorial Stadium.
