Marshall wins shootout over Manvel 52-51 in OT

MANVEL — In 2015 and 2017, Manvel won the 6A and 5A state track titles while finishing as a 6A state runner-up in 2016. The Fort Bend Marshall Buffaloes captured the 2018 5A state track crown.

That's what the game between the No. 1 and No. 3 area-ranked football teams looked like on the football field -- a track meet.

Marshall junior quarterback Devon Achane must have thought he was still running at the University of Texas Michael A. Myers Track Stadium. Achane won a gold medal on the 4x400 meter relay team and two silver medals on the 4x200 and 4x100 meter relay teams as the Buffaloes returned home with the 2018 state track championship.

The display by Achane against the Mavericks was perhaps the most prolific performance by any individual player against a Manvel team.

The versatile signal-caller scored all seven touchdowns for the Buffaloes including two kickoff returns covering 88 and 73 yards. He also scored on runs of 5, 31, 33, 52, and 1-yard with the final score in overtime to set up the two-point conversion that Achane would also score to give Marshall the 52-51 district win.

"Devon Achane is an amazing kid, and such a humble kid – great kid – and as you saw, a special athlete," Marshall coach James Williams said. "He put a team on his back vs. a great team."

With the score tied 44-44 at the end of regulation, Manvel got the ball first in overtime and easily scored on a 5-yard run by Garrison Johnson. Moreno kicked the extra point for the 51-44 lead.

It was Johnson who put the Mavs in an overtime position when he scored on an 18-yard run with only 1:13 left in the game. Johnson scored four times as the workhorse on offense.

Achane led the Buffaloes to score on their first possession in overtime and then Marshall made the decision to go for the win.

But the Buffs didn't make it easy on themselves as they were penalized on a block in the back and holding on the next play.

However, Achane threw a 28-yard fade pass to Dalevon Campbell that was caught at the Manvel 1-yard line setting up the next Achane score.

Marshall lined up to go for the two-points, but a false start set them back five yards. After a time out, the Buffs decided to go for the win or lose play. Achane rolled right looking for a receiver, then tucked the ball and scrambled back inside against the flow of the Manvel defense for the winning points.

The Mavs set the tone for the game as they took their opening possession down the field to score on a 17-yard pass from Josh Coltrin to Jude Mayon. Luis Moreno booted the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 5:51 left in the first quarter.

But the Buffs would answer with the 88-yard kickoff return to tie up the game and then take the lead with 10:16 left in the second on a 5-yard touchdown by Achane making the score 14-7.

Marshall outscored the Mavs 22-14 in the second period for a 29-21 lead at intermission.

Ladarius Owens scored on a 39-yard run with 4:14 left in the third quarter to go with a Coltrin to Eric Hebert 14-yard scoring pass earlier in the frame.

Johnson scored on runs of 3, 3, 18, and 5 yards in the second half to keep the Mavs in the track meet, but ultimately it would come down to the Manvel defense unable to stop Achane.

Achane finished with 210 yards and five touchdowns on 24 carries and two kickoff returns for 88 and 73-yards.

Coltrin was 10-of-20 passing for 220 yards and two TDs. He also had 11 carries for 92 yards and one score.

Johnson had 20 totes for 127 yards and four touchdowns while Owens had 123 yards on 20 carries for one score.

Roland Kimble had five catches for 117 yards to lead Manvel's receivers.

Manvel will regroup to travel to Cowart Stadium to face Houston Northside at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 28.
