Manvel wins shootout with Dawson

MANVEL — Dawson's game with Manvel was expected to be a shootout and the fans got exactly what they expected as the two teams combined for 1,034 total yards with Manvel getting the nod with 574 yards and the win 62-35.

The No. 1 area-ranked Manvel was in total command the entire game while Dawson continued to fight the whole game. The much-talented Mavericks just had too many offensive weapons that the Eagles couldn't contain.

Dawson got on the scoreboard first when they drove down to the Manvel four-yard line. The Eagles resorted to a little trickery as Drake Rainer got the ball on a double-reverse. After handing off the ball, Dawson quarterback Zach Smith slipped out into the end zone as Rainer swept left end and then threw a left handed pass to Smith who was all alone for the touchdown making the score 7-0.

Led by junior QB Deriq King, the elusive signal-caller hit 20-of-31 passing for 313 yards and four TDs while gaining an addition 98 yards on 12 carries and two more scores. He had 411 total yards and a hand in six touchdowns.

Manvel answered with three touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 21-7 lead entering the second period.

Qyalan Clay put the Mavs up 7-0 with 7:29 left in the opening quarter on an 18-yard scoring pass from King.

Less than three minutes later, Will Lockett picked off a Dawson pass and returned it for a 37-yard touchdown.

Manvel added one more as King hit Reggie Hemphill on a 10-yard scoring strike and a 21-0 advantage following the PAT by Julius Montano.

The Mavs added another with a 13-yard scoring run by Clay making the score 28-7.

Dawson continued to move the ball as they tacked on another score when Vance Galloway scored on a 1-yard keeper to cut the lead to 28-14.

But Manvel scored again before intermission on a 12-yard keeper by King for a 35-14 lead at the half.

The second half was much closer as the Mavs outscored the Eagles 27-21.

Dawson scored first in the second half on a sensational 70-yard scoring dash by senior running back Brett Winnegan to cut the margin to 35-21 with 10:16 left in the third quarter.

Manvel answered with a 3-yard scoring run by King to make the score 42-21. The Mavs added another score when King connected with Sean Dykes on a 16-yard scoring strike to make the score 49-21 with 2:49 still left in the third.

Winnegan scored again on a 14-yard run to bring the Eagles to within 49-28 with 10:46 remaining in the final period.

Winnegan wasn't finished as he got loose on a 54-yard scoring jaunt to close the gap to 49-35 with 8:12 remaining.

The Mavs once again answered as Clay scored on a 1-yard plunge increasing the lead to 55-35 at the 6:32 mark of the game.

With only 3:41 left in the contest, the Mavs put the dagger in the heart with a 71-yard scoring bomb from King to Gary Haynes to put the final score on the board 62-35.

Dawson was led by Winnegan who had his best game of the season with 195 yards rushing on 19 carries for three TDs. Saevion Johnson had 11 totes for 64 yards. Galloway had 15 carries for 56 yards and one score.

QB Zach Smith was 5-of-11 passing for 107 yards with one INT. 

Manvel running back Qyalan Clay had 113 yards on the ground on 16 carries for two scores.

Haynes led all receivers with eight catches for 161 yards and one TD. Dykes had four grabs for 59 yards and one score. Hemphill had three catches for 44 yards and one TD. Clay had two grabs for 25 yards and a score.

Dawson will travel to face Pasadena Dobie in a critical District 22-6A showdown on Saturday, October 18 at Pasadena Veterans Stadium at 1:00 p.m.

Manvel will host Alvin at Alvin Memorial Stadium on Friday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m
