Manvel shuts out Sam Rayburn 62-0

MANVEL — It came as no surprise that Manvel would beat Sam Rayburn. The question was by how much.

Head coach Kirk Martin played his regulars and then substituted liberally to beat the Texans 62-0 and improve to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in district.

The Mavericks will travel to Pasadena Veterans Stadium on Thursday, October 29 to play Pasadena Memorial at 7:00 p.m. and then the District 22-6A title game will be on Friday, November 6 when the Mavs host the Pearland Oilers (9-0, 7-0) at Alvin Memorial Stadium. Both teams have already reserved their place in the Class 6A Region III playoffs with the Oilers advancing in the Division I bracket and the Mavs moving on in Division II.

The only blemish on either team is the loss suffered by the Mavericks to the Westfield Mustangs in a non-district contest. Otherwise, both teams should be primed and ready for the final game of the regular season. The only outcome will be which team claims the district championship as both teams will continue their season in the playoffs

The two teams won't see each other again in the post-season and after the realignment in February of 2016, the Mavericks could drop down to Class 5A with the opening of Shadow Creek High School which would end their 6A action.

Manvel took care of business against Rayburn and didn't allow the Texans to have any false hopes of winning the game and ending their current 25-game losing streak.

The Mavs rolled up 455 total yards while the Texans managed only 67 total yards including minus 3 yards passing.

Three different Manvel players scored in the first quarter as Hunter Hagdorn caught a 9-yard scoring strike from QB D'Eriq King, Sean Dykes snagged a 4-yard toss from King, and Deidrique Anderson grabbed a 9-yard pass from King for a 20-0 lead.

The scoring parade continued in the second period Arik Bennett caught a 10-yard pass from King and then Dykes and King hooked up again for another TD covering 45-yards and then Caleb Blanton caught a sixth TD pass from King for 20-yards making the score 41-0 at intermission.

D'Vaughn Pennamon put a rushing score on the board on a 49-yard run and then Manvel back-up QB Kyle Trask added another scoring toss to Cam Scott covering 22-yards.

The final score for the Mavs came at the 8:35 mark of the fourth quarter when C'ecori Tolds returned a 59-yard punt for a touchdown to post the final 62-0 score.

King finished the game hitting 11-of-13 passing for 172 yards and six TDs. Trask was 8-of-8 for 93 yards and one score.

Pennamon had three carries for 89 yards and one TD.

Anderson had three catches for 62 yards and one score.

Manvel had eight different ball carriers pick up 182 yards on the ground and 12 different receivers caught passes for 273 yards and seven TDs.
