Manvel flies past Sam Rayburn 61-7

MANVEL — As has been the case for most of the season in district play, the Manvel Mavericks have scored enough points in the first half to win the game leaving the second half to the reserves.

Such was the case when the Mavericks pounded the Sam Rayburn Texans 61-7 to improve to 8-0 on the season and 6-0 in district.

Manvel scored 28 points in the first quarter, added 30 more in the second period and coasted in the second half.

Junior QB Deriq King hit 11-of-15 passing for 222 yards and five touchdowns.

King hit four different receivers for the five scores.

It all started with a 50-yard scoring pass to Hunter Hagdorn on the first play of the game for a quick 7-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, D'Vaughn Pennamon snagged a 9-yard scoring toss for a 14-0 advantage.

With 7:26 left in the opening period, King found Reggie Hemphill for a 41-yard scoring strike for a 21-0 lead.

Sean Dykes closed out the first quarter with a 5-yard scoring pass from King.

Pennamon got his second score of the game on a 2-yard pass from King and Dykes followed with a 20-yard scoring grab with 4:03 left before halftime.

With only 1:54 left before intermission, backup QB Kyle Trask scored on a 16-yard keeper and then the Manvel closed out the scoring with a safety making the score 58-0 after two quarters.

Manvel got a 26-yard field goal from Julius Montano for a 61-0 lead in the third.

Sam Rayburn finally got on the scoreboard when Andres Matrinez scored on a 23-yard run with 3:36 left in the game.

Manvel ran up 553 total yards compared to only 147 yards for Rayburn.

Qyalan Clay had 100 yards rushing on only six carries.

Hemphill had two catches for 62 yards and a score. Dykes had two grabs for 25 yards and two TDs. Pennamon caught two for 11 yards and two scores. Hagdon had one catch for 50 yards and a score.

Manvel will host Pasadena Memorial on Friday, Oct. 31 at Alvin Memorial Stadium at 7:00 p.m.

The Mavs have already secured the No. 1 seed in the 6A Region III Div. II playoffs. They will travel to face the Pearland Oilers (9-0, 7-0) on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m. at The Rig in a showdown for the 2014 District 22-6A crown.
