Manvel thrashes Galena Park to stay perfect on season

MANVEL — In the final game of the regular season, the Manvel Mavericks maintained their undefeated season and kept their momentum entering the post-season with a 69-7 thrashing of the Galena Park Yellowjackets.

The Mavs not only finished with a perfect 9-0 season, but also claimed their second straight District 23-5A championship.

The game was decided after the opening 12 minutes as the Mavs built a 35-0 lead.

Manvel quarterback Kason Martin was spot on passing with four touchdown passes in the opening quarter.

Martin threw a 13-yard scoring toss to Warren Laster at the 10:55 mark for a 7-0 lead.

After a turnover by the Jackets, Martin hit Jalen Preston on a 26-yard scoring strike 20 seconds later for a 14-0 lead.

Manvel ball got the ball back off a punt on their own 27 and Martin promptly lofted a touchdown bomb to Laster covering 73-yards with 7:00 left in the first for a 21-0 advantage.

The Manvel defense forced another Galena Park punt which was caught by C'ecori Tolds and he took it to the house on a crowd-pleasing 60-yard punt return for the score with :10 seconds still left in the opening stanza making the score 35-0.

Manvel added two more scores before intermission as Martin and Laster hooked up again for a third time, this time covering 66-yards with 7:15 left in the second quarter and a 42-0 score.

The final score of the first half came on a 26-yard scoring run by Deneric Prince with 1:50 left before the half making the score 49-0.

Ladarius Owens scored the only touchdown for the Mavs in the third quarter on a 48-yard touchdown with 9:10 on the clock.

The Mavs added 13 points in the final period on a 5-yard run by Josh Coltrin and a 25-yard scamper by Edward Zilton making the score 69-0.

Galena Park finally found the end zone with 2:20 left in the game on a 39-yard scoring pass from Alec Gonzalez to Jalen Davis making the final 69-7.

Martin had an outstanding game giving him some positive motivation entering the post-season. The field general was 12-of-17 passing for 318 yards and five touchdowns.

The ground game was well balanced with 10 different players touching the ball led by Prince with five carries for 43 yards and one score.

Leading receiver for the Mavs was Laster who had six grabs for 170 yards and three TDs.

Now, the real season begins in the playoffs as Manvel continues their quest to capture a first-ever state championship. Over the past several years, Manvel has made it to the threshold with deep runs in the post-season, but they have never been able to get over the hurdle that would send them across the finish line.

No. 1 Class 5A state-ranked Manvel (9-0) will host the Madison Marlins (6-3) on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Alvin Memorial Stadium in the opening round of the Class 5A Region III Div. I bi-district playoffs.
