Manvel routs Austin 78-6 in opening round

MANVEL — In 2014, Manvel thrashed Fort Bend Travis in the area round of the playoffs 76-23 to set a new team record for points in a single game.

The Mavericks (11-0) opened up the 2016 bi-district playoffs with a complete rout of the Houston Austin Mustangs 78-6 to set a new team record.

The only thing that saved Austin (6-4) from the score being over 100 points was the coaches agreed to have a running clock in the second half since the score at halftime was 65-6.

The game was really over in the first two minutes of the game when the defense scored on a safety with 10:24 left in the first quarter.

After getting the kick following the safety, it took only one play and six seconds for the Mavs to score again when Jalen Preston hauled in a 28-yard pass from QB Kason Martin for a 9-0 lead following the PAT by Luis Moreno.

The defense scored again when Brian Johnson picked up a fumble and rambled 6-yards for another score to put the lead at 16-0 at the 8:33 mark of the first quarter.

The Mavs scored again on a Sam Smith 1-yard plunge to up the lead to 23-0 at the 4:19 first period mark.

Austin then surprised everyone when QB Malik Hornsby found an opening up the middle of the Mavs defense and sprinted 60-yards for the Mustangs only score of the game. A bad snap foiled the PAT and the Mavs were leading 23-6 with 2:56 still remaining in the first quarter.

But it took only 14 seconds for Manvel to answer as Cam Scott gathered in the ensuing kickoff and returned it 85-yards for another score to make the score 30-6.

Manvel scored one more time before the end of the first period when Kaylon Stokes caught a 43-yard pass with 44 seconds left after the first 12 minutes of action making the score 37-6.

The second quarter was more of the same as Manvel tacked on 28 more points before intermission.

Preston scored on a 65-yard punt return; Terence Norman caught an 11-yard scoring toss from Martin; Smith scored on a 4-yard run; and Deneric Prince scored on a 10-yard run to make the score 65-6 at the half.

Martin was replaced in the second quarter and was 9-of-10 passing for 180 yards and three TDs.

After agreeing to a running clock in the second half, Manvel scored two more times on a 3-yard run by Josiah Flakes and a 38-yard sprint by Warren Laster to post the 78-6 final score.

Manvel head coach Kirk Martin put everyone in the game as the Mavs had 13 different players carry the ball for a total of 235 rushing yards.

There were eight different players who caught at least one pass for 234 yards.

Manvel finished with 469 total yards while Austin managed only 24 total yards.

The Mavericks advance to the area round and will face the New Caney Eagles (9-2) on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the University of Houston TDECU Stadium.
