Manvel powers way past Waltrip 42-3

MANVEL — It took only one play to score for Manvel that would quickly set the tone for the outcome of this Class 5A Region III Div I bi-district playoff game.

Manvel senior quarterback Kaeden Smith launched a 41-yard missile to wide receiver Derius Clerkley for a touchdown to make the score 7-0 with 9:53 left in the opening quarter.

On Manvel's third offensive play of the game, Smith connected with Clerkley again, this time on a 54-yard scoring pass to give the Mavericks a 14-0 advantage with 6:56 left in the opening stanza.

In the second quarter, Smith ran for an 8-yard touchdown run making the score 21-0 and then Smith and Clerkley hooked up for a third score, this time on a 17-yard scoring strike with 8:20 left in the first half to make the score 28-0.

Manvel running back Steve Polk got in on the scoring action as he crossed the pay station twice on 4-yard runs before the end of the first half to give the Mavs a lopsided 42-0 lead at intermission.

"We got off to a great start," said Manvel coach Kevin Hall. "I was really proud of our offense. We struggled last week but we were able to come in here and dominate. We challenged our team to come out and exploded and that's what they did and I'm happy for them.

'We did really well on defense. That's a good football team we played. They're well coached and fundamentally sound."

Manvel played their backup players in the second half.

Waltrip's lone score came in the third quarter when Eliut Gonzalez booted a 43-yard field goal with 13 seconds left in the period.

Smith was 6-of-8 passing for 140 yards and three touchdowns while he rushed for one score.

Andrew Riley had nine carries for 93 yards, Dillion Boone had seven totes for 59 yards, and Polk had six rushes for 53 yards and two TDs.

Clerkley had four catches for 118 yards and three touchdowns.

Manvel (8-3) will face Smithson-Valley (10-1) on Friday, November 18 in the Class 5A Region III Div I area round at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Bastrop.

This is the 11th straight season the Mavs have advanced to the area round of the post-season.
