Manvel runs past Nederland 49-14

MANVEL — The Manvel Mavericks faced the Nederland Bulldogs in the opening round of the Class 5A Region III Div. II playoffs and easily took care of business 49-14 to advance to the area round.
Manvel will now face Lamar Consolidated on Friday, November 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Traylor Stadium.
The Mavs took control early when they scored on a 13-yard run by Donavon Eaglin with 4:52 left in the opening period for a 7-0 lead.
After a three-and-out by Nederland, the Mavs struck paydirt again on a 39-yard scoring pass from QB Tucker Yarbrough to WR Jalen Paxton for a 14-0 advantage with 2:47 left in the first quarter.
Manvel upped the margin to 21-0 with 8:27 left in the second quarter on a 2-yard run by Eaglin.
The Mavs scored one more time in the first half when Yarbrough hit Jalen Walthall on a 50-yard bomb with 6:26 remaining in the second quarter making the score 28-0.
Nederland finally got things going with 6:26 left before halftime when they began a drive at their own 29.
It only took six plays for the Bulldogs to score with :56 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 28-7.
Manvel then made a critical error as the Bulldogs intercepted a pass and ran it to the Mavs 6-yard line.
It took only one play to score and with :09 seconds left in the half, the Bulldogs scored to cut the lead in half 28-14 at intermission.
The second half was all Manvel as they scored 21 unanswered points to make the final score 49-14.
In the third quarter, Eaglin got loose on his third touchdown of the game on a 65-yard scoring jaunt on the second play of the second half to increase the score to 35-14.
Eaglin scored his fourth touchdown in the fourth period with 6:13 left in the game to make he score 42-14.
The final score came on a blocked punt by Brian Wilturner who recovered in the end zone to post the final 49-14 score.
Yarbrough finished the night hitting 9-of-15 passing for 151 yards and two TDs.
Eaglin finished as the leading rusher with 181-yards on 17 carries for four scores.
Walthall had three catches for 64-yards and one TD while Paxton had three grabs for 58 yards and one score.
