MANVEL — The Manvel Mavericks made it look easy against the La Porte Bulldogs in their 45-21 trouncing in the Class 5A Region III Div. II bi-district win.
As he has done all season, sophomore quarterback Deriq King led the way on offense as he 16-of-26 passing for 244 yards and two scores while picking up 128 yards on 16 carries including scoring runs of 5, 1, and 72-yards giving him 372 total yards. Manvel had 484 total yards as a team while La Porte had 358 total yards.
The Mavs scored first on a 47-yard pass from King to Oyalan Clay with 7:08 left in the opening period for a 7-0 lead following the PAT by Julius Montano.
But La Porte came right back with a score of their own when Johnathan Lewis scored on a 2-yard plunge to knot up the game at 7-7 with 4:12 left in the first.
Manvel added another touchdown just before the first quarter ended on a 5-yard King run and a 14-7 lead.
The Mavs got a turnover early in the second period and cashed in with a 25-yard run by Jacoby Perro at the 11:47 mark for a 21-7 lead.
The Bulldogs continued to fight as they scored on a 1-yard keeper by QB Jordan Jackson to close the gap to 21-14, but King would close out the first half scoring for the Mavs with a 1-yard sneak to post the 28-14 halftime score.
Manvel continued their high octane offense in the second half as Gary Haynes caught a 42-yard scoring pass from King to increas the lead to 35-14 and then King followed that score with a 72-yard scoring dash to make the score 42-14 entering the final frame.
With 9:15 left in the fourth, Britt Grant scored on a 16-yard run for the Bulldogs to make the score 42-21, but the Mavs put an exclamation point on the win with a 25-yard field goal with three minutes left in the game to make the final 45-21.
Clay also had an exceptional game as he rushed for 83 yards on 13 carries while grabbing two passes for 59 yards and one score.
Haynes, who leads the Mavs in receiving yards, caught six passes for 76 yards and one TD. Jamond Manuel grabbed four passes for 66 yards. Perro had three rushes for 25 yards and a score.
Manvel (10-1) will advance to the area round where they will face Fort Bend Bush (9-2) on Friday, November 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Pasadena Veterans Stadium.
