Manvel wins shootout over Cy-Woods 63-47

MANVEL — The Manvel Mavericks didn't have time to look ahead to the Katy Tigers as the Cy-Woods Wildcats gave them all they wanted in the Class 6A Region III Div. II semifinals.

The high-octane offense of the Mavericks was still able to thwart the never-say-die Wildcats.

With 8:49 left in the fourth quarter, Manvel scored on a 42-yard pass from QB Deriq King to D'Vaughn Pennamon making the score 63-33.

But Cy-Woods wasn't going to go down that easy as they put two more scores on the board to cut the lead to 63-47, but it was too little, too late as the Mavs lead was too much to overcome.

The Wildcats came out quick in the first quarter to build a 14-7 lead with 5:02 left in the opening period.

Manvel fumbled on their first possession and Cy-Woods scooped up the ball and scored on a 14-yard recovery with only 12 seconds gone in the game.

But the Mavs answered as King hit Reggie Hemphill on a 13-yard scoring toss to knot the score 7-7.

Cy-Woods answered with a 40-yard scoring pass from Nick Hooper to Taylor Tesch for the 14-7 lead.

With 2:06 still left in the first, King tied up the game 14-14 on a nifty 5-yard run.

Manvel began to separate themselves from the Wildcats in the second quarter as Gary Haynes caught a 7-yard scoring pass and D'Vaughn Pennamon burst up the middle of the Cy-Woods defense for a 44-yard scoring run to take a 28-14 lead with 5:50 left in the half.

The Wildcats made sure the Mavs went in to the dressing room at the half knowing they weren't going to give up as they scored on a 1-yard run with only 1:53 left before intermission making the score 28-21.

Manvel continued their offensive dominance in the second with two scores in the third as Haynes caught another scoring pass for 15 yards following a 24-yard field goal by Cy-Woods to make the score 35-24.

Cy-Woods continued to answer as Hooper scored on a 1-yard keeper to cut the margin to 35-32 after converting the two-point conversion.

That's when the Mavs took the game by the collar and scored four straight touchdowns as Pennamon scored on a 4-yard run, Qyalan Clay added an 11-yard scoring run, Haynes burned the Cy-Woods secondary for a 77-yard scoring bomb, and Pennamon hauled in a 42-yard scoring pass to make the score 63-32.

"We're trying to be dominant and I don't know that we are yet," Manvel head coach Kirk Martin said. "The way the game started out was just atrocious. Our defense held them to 14 points first - we gave them seven offensively.

"I thought we did just enough to get out of here with a win. They were just really a gutsy football team and a team that deserved to be in the third round."

Cy Woods (8-5) put up 488 yards of offense. That included 317 yards in the air. Wildcats quarterback Nick Hooper threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns, while RJ Harmon, who ran for 101 yards, also threw a 40-yard touchdown to Taylor Tesch.

Manvel quarterback D'Eriq King threw for 319 yards and five touchdowns on 20-of-29 passing. Three touchdowns went to Gary Haynes, who caught six balls for 110 yards.

King also ran for 129 yards and added a rushing touchdown, while D'Vaughn Pennamon finished with 101 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries.

Manvel (13-0) moves on to the regional finals and gets a second chance at Katy (12-1). The two met in the same round last year after the Mavericks were upset in the 2012 region semifinals.

Katy beat Manvel 56-14 last year on the way to the state championship game. The Tigers beat Dawson 63-20 earlier Friday at Rice to advance.
