Manvel, Eaglin roll past Barbers Hill 55-35

MANVEL — Manvel and Barbers Hill displayed their high-octane offenses rolling up almost 1,000 yards in total offense, but there was never any question as to the outcome of this Class 5A Region III Div. II semifinal contest.

The Mavericks were always in control as they took the 55-35 win to advance to the 5A Region III Div. II championship game to face district rival Fort Bend Marshall on Saturday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Freedom Field.

The only loss for Marshall (12-1) was pinned on the Buffaloes when the two teams met during the regular season. Manvel won that contest 38-34 to go on to claim the District 11-5A-II title and remain undefeated at 13-0 entering the 5A region final.

The star of the game for Manvel was senior running back Donovan Eaglin who raced his way to 287 yards on 19 carries for five touchdowns. He also had a score called back because of a penalty.

“Our plan going in was to run the ball,” Manvel head coach Kevin Hall said. “Our offensive line played extremely well and allowed two really great running backs, Donovan Eaglin and Jordon Vaughn, to go off today.”

But it was Eaglin who led the way as he scored on runs of 24, 72, 67, 27, and 51-yards.

Manvel finished the game with 329 yards on the ground and 247 yards passing for a total of 576 total yards.

Barbers Hill finished with 281 yards rushing and 124 yards passing for total of 405 yards.

Manvel scored first when quarterback Tucker Yarbrough hit Jalen Walthall on a 4-yard scoring toss to take a 7-0 lead with 9:00 left in the opening quarter.

The big play in the short five-play, 53-yard drive was a 36-yard pass completion from Yarbrough to Walthall from the 40 to the four-yard line.

But Barbers Hill answered on their next possession on a 1-yard run by quarterback Christian Kaopua to tie up the game at 7-7 with 6:52 left in the first.

Kaopua put on a running display of his own to keep the Eagles in the game with 26 carries for 207 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 4, 8, and 63-yards.

The Mavs took a 21-7 lead on a 72-yard bomb from Yarbrough to Walthall and a 24-yard run by Eaglin with 3:01 still left in the opening stanza.

The Eagles managed to squeeze one more score in the first quarter when they got the ensuing kick off at their own 20.

However, Kaopua caught the Manvel secondary napping as he hit Cameron Cauley on a 62-yard pass to the Manvel 17. Kaopua scored on the second play to cut the margin to 21-14 with 1:51 left in the first.

It took Manvel only :23 seconds to answer as Eaglin scored on the third play following the ensuing kickoff on a 73-yard scoring jaunt to bump the lead up to 27-14 following the missed PAT.

Manvel would score two more times in the second quarter on a 25-yard pass from Yarbrough to Jalen Paxton and a 67-yard run by Eaglin with 1:29 left before intermission.

Barbers Hill scored with :20 seconds left in the first half on a Kaopua 8-yard run to make the score 41-21 at the half.

The scoring slowed down in the second half as both teams scored a touchdown in each quarter.

Manvel scored in the third period on a 27-yard run by Eaglin and Barbers Hill scored on a 63-yard run by Kaopua making the score 48-27. The Eagles missed the PAT.

Eaglin finished up his outstanding game with a 51-yard scoring run with 4:11 left in the game while Brent Holden scored on a 23-yard run for Barbers Hill. Holden also ran the two-point conversion to make the final score 55-35.

Yarbrough was 14-of-25 passing for 247 yards and three touchdowns.

Walthall snagged six passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns while Paxton had three catches for 50 yards and one TD.
