Marshall beats Manvel 40-10 for region title

MANVEL — It was billed as a rematch between Manvel and Fort Bend Marshall, but this time, the prize was for the Class 5A Region III Div. II crown and a ticket to the 5A Div. II state semifinals.

Manvel won the first showdown 38-34 at Traylor Stadium resulting in a District 11-5A II championship, but this game had a complete different outcome as the Buffaloes stampeded the Mavericks 40-10 for the region crown.

The game actually became the Devon Achane/Malik Hornsby show as the pair used razzle dazzle to entertain their fans while Manvel just watched for most of the afternoon.

When the Texas A&M commit Achane wasn't loose on a crowd-pleasing run, Hornsby was slinging the ball for a score or finding space to run. Either way, the Manvel defense was unable to contain either one.

Achane finished the game with 15 carries for 132 yards and four touchdowns while Hornsby had 11 totes for 135 strides on the ground while also completing 8-of-14 passing for 264 yards and two more scores.

On the second play of Marshall's first possession, Achane zipped his way through the Manvel defense into the open spaces for a 71-yard scoring jaunt and a 7-0 lead with 8:52 left in the first quarter.

The Buffaloes scored wouldn't score again until Achane scored on a 1-yard run with 8:20 left in the second period for a 14-0 lead.

Hornsby would score with 3:46 left in the first quarter on 57-yard run, but a holding penalty would bring the ball back to eventually force a punt.

Manvel showed some life on offense driving from their own five-yard line to the Marshall 30 before QB Tucker Yarbrough would throw an interception to Norman Baker.

The two teams would trade punts and Marshall got the ball on their own nine-yard line following a good punt by Brooke Honore.

On the first play, Hornsby hit Brandon Tryon on a slant pass for a 91-yard scoring strike giving the Buffs a 21-0 advantage with 6:07 left in the second quarter.

Manvel finally uncorked some offense starting at their own 25 following the ensuing kickoff. On second-and-7, junior running back Jordan Vaughn broke free for a 52-yard run to the Buffs 20.

The Mavs scored on a 15-yard scoring toss from Yarbrough to Jalen Walthall to cut the margin to 21-7 with 4:45 left before intermission.

However, Marshall answered with another score when Achane punched a 2-yard run in the end zone for a 28-7 lead with 1:45 left.

Manvel drove down the field to the Marshall 8-yard line and settled for a 24-yard Luis Moreno field goal with no time on the first half clock with the score 28-10.

Marshall closed out the game in the second half as Manvel was held scoreless while the Buffs score two times in the third quarter for 12 points while missing two PATs making the final score 40-10.

Donovan Eaglin was the leading ball carrier for Manvel with 17 carries for 109 yards.

Yarbrough was 13-for-26 passing for 143 yards and one touchdown and one INT.

Walthall had 6 catches for 90 yards and Manvel's only touchdown.

Manvel finishes the 2019 football season at 13-1. Manvel has had nine double-digit win seasons in 10 years and they will move up to Class 5A Division I in 2020.
