Manvel outlasts Dripping Springs 38-21

MANVEL — Drippings Springs outlasted Georgetown 49-42 last week as both teams combined for over a 1,000 yards of total offense, but the Tigers weren't able to hang with the Manvel Mavericks.
Manvel had 565 total yards while the Mavs defense held Dripping Springs to 359 total yards in a 38-21 Class 5A Region III Div. I area playoff win to advance to the regional semifinals to face the Hightower Hurricanes.
The Mavs scored a touchdown and a field goal in the opening quarter against Dripping Springs.
Junior placekicker Antonio Rodriguez booted a 25-yard field goal giving Manvel an early 3-0 lead and then junior RB De'Monte Seymore scored on a 4-yard run for a 10-7 advantage.
With 5:08 left in the first period, the Tigers took the lead on an 18-yard scoring pass from sophomore QB Austin Novosad to WR senior Cameron O'Banan making the score 7-3.
But the Mavs responded with a 4-yard run by Seymore to retake the lead 10-7 with 3:03 left in the opening stanza.
Manvel had two scoring opportunities taken away because of fumbles that Dripping Springs recovered.
Dripping Springs had a scoring opportunity of their own when they drove to the Mavs 20 before they missed a 37-yard field goal attempt leaving Manvel with a slim 10-7 lead.
The Tigers took the lead after RB junior Preston Alford broke free on a 58-yard run to the Manvel five yard line.
One play later, Alford scored on a 5-yard run giving the Tigers the lead 14-10 with 4:39 left in the opening half.
It didn't take Manvel long to answer as they scored on a 34-yard pass from senior QB Gabriel Larry to junior WR Kelby Williams who made a spectacular catch in the end zone to make the score 17-14 at the 1:02 mark before intermission.
Seymore was instrumental in the scoring drive as he had two runs of 16 and 20 yards to keep the Mavs moving toward the goal line.
Manvel's defense was able to stop Dripping Springs at their own 28 with a fumble recovery on their first possession of the second half.
That set up a sensational 72-yard scoring jaunt by Wyoming commit senior RB Jordon Vaughn to increase the lead to 24-14.
The Tigers wouldn't go away as they scored on a 1-yard plunge by Alford with 7:08 still left in the third to cut the lead to 24-21.
Manvel immediately responded as Larry found senior WR Jalen Walthall behind the Tigers defense for a crowd-pleasing 66-yard scoring bomb to extend the lead to 31-21 with 5:57 left in the third.
The Mavs held the Tigers scoreless in the fourth period while Seymore scored on a 3-yard run to close out the game 38-21.
Seymore was the top ball carrier for the Mavs as he had 172 yards rushing on 17 carries and two scores. Vaughn had 100 yards on six totes and one TD. Ty Harris had 16 carries for 70 yards.
Larry was 12-of-19 passing for 181 yards and two TDs.
Walthall had six catches for 112 and one score while Kelby Williams had three grabs for 53 yards and one TD.
Manvel will play Hightower in the Class 5A Region III Div. I semifinals on Thursday, December 24 at 3:00 p.m. at Freedom Field.
The Mavs defeated the Hurricanes during the regular season 49-38.
