Manvel upends Dawson 50-38

MANVEL — It was a battle of the district unbeatens when Dawson and Manvel faced one another in the first round of District 22-6A action.

Both were considered favorites to capture the league title this season. But Dawson head coach Mark Barre wasn't expecting his roundballers to go on a scoring drought that would leave them with their first district loss of the season.

All is not lost as the two teams will play again and Barre and Manvel head coach Greg Devers know that there are a couple of other teams in the district that can grab a win on any given night.

The Eagles are usually one of the more consistent scoring teams in the district, but on this night, Dawson's offense unexpectedly was absent.

It appeared that Dawson (17-5, 4-1) would get the win as evidenced by the Eagles grabbing a 13-8 lead at the end of the first eight minutes.

But the basket dried up at the 6:30 mark of the second quarter when the Eagles didn't hit another basket while the Mavericks went on a 14-0 run to grab a 22-15 halftime lead.

"We couldn't score," Barre said. "They kicked our butts on the board, and we couldn't keep them out of the lane."

The Mavericks built a 25-17 lead in the third quarter before Dawson finally found some offense going on a 10-0 run to take a 27-25 advantage late in the third.

Manvel managed to finish the third period with a 29-28 lead.

But the Mavs would close out the final quarter 21-10 to get the 50-38 victory.

Jalen Lewis led the Eagles with 10 points while Manvel's freshman Jalen Preston scored 10.
