Manvel beats Texas City for a four-way tie atop district standings


MANVEL — Manvel pulled out a hard-fought 52-49 win over Texas City in a 23-5A district showdown leaving four teams tied at the top of the league standings.

Manvel, Texas City, Fort Band Marshall and Fort Bend Elkins are all now 5-1 in district play.

Neither team could establish a lead larger than three-points in the first three quarters which had nine lead changes and three ties.

Texas City took the early in the game 15-13 after the opening eight minutes of action.

Manvel responded with an 11-9 second quarter leaving the two teams tied at 24-24 at intermission.

Leading 33-30 late in the third quarter, Texas City's Kevon Owens scored seven points on three straight Stings' possessions to give his team a 37-33 advantage.

But Manvel came back hitting some timely buckets as Vernice Seriale fired in a near half-court buzzer beater giving the Mavs a 41-39 lead entering the final period.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Manvel got their largest lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Jason Scott for a 50-43 lead.

Texas City continued to battle and cut the lead to 52-49 with a chance to tie up the game on their final possession, but the Mavs came up with a big defensive play to escape with a road win 52-49.

Scott was Manvel's top offensive weapon with 17 points including 12 in the second half. Jalen Preston added 14 points and nine boards for the Mavs.
