Shadow Creek slips past Manvel 71-65


MANVEL — The game between Shadow Creek and Manvel almost became a free throw shooting contest as there were a total of 69 free throws attempted between both teams which is way more than the average high school game.

Shadow Creek was 26-of-36 at the free throw line and Manvel was 21-of-33 which almost proved to be the difference in the outcome of the game.

The Sharks took the opening quarter 14-10 and then the Mavs rallied to take the second period 13-9 sending both teams into the dressing room at intermission tied 23-23.

The tandem of A.J. McBride (11-points) and Kam Scott (nine points) led the way for the Mavs while the Sharks had a balanced scoring attack with Akin Newton leading the way with eight points while Elijah Elliott tossing in seven points.

Shadow Creek was 3-for-3 from the line in the first half while Manvel was 5-of-8.

But the second half turned into multiple trips to the free throw line for both squads as Manvel was 16-of-24 and Shadow Creek was 23-of-33.

The third quarter was won by the Sharks 22-17 making the score 45-40 entering the final period.

Manvel hit four 3-pointers in their attempt to stay in the game as Jalen Preston, who scored only one basket and one free throw in the first half raised his offensive output with 20 points in the second half including 8-of-13 from the line.

He got strong support from McBride who scored 13 points in the second half as well as hitting 7-of-9 from the charity stripe for a team-high 24 points.

Tyron Henry of Shadow Creek was the driving force for the Sharks in the second half with 25 points including 12-of-15 from the free throw line.

Henry got help from Newton who finished with 20 points and 7-of-10 from the line while Elliott finished with 13 points and 6-for-9 at the line to lead the Sharks to the 71-65 win.

Shadow Creek improved to 7-1 in district while Manvel evened their league record at 3-3.
