MANVEL — Ball High edged Manvel 47-38 and all but clinched the District 23-5A which will be the first-ever outright district championship for the Lady Tors in the history of the school.
A win over Fort Bend Marshall will give the Lady Tors (14-1) the title. Their last district title was a co-championship in 1984.
Manvel jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead, but the Lady Tors went on an 8-1 run to take a 9-7 lead in the first quarter.
The Lady Mavs tied the game at 9-9 when McKinzie Green hit a soft jumper, however, Ball High went on a 6-0 spurt making the score 15-9 at the end of the first period.
Once again, Manvel got hot on offense and opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run capped off by a 3-pointer by Green for a 17-16 lead.
But the Lady Tors closed out the quarter 8-0 giving them a 24-17 lead at intermission.
After Ball High built a 33-30 lead in the third quarter, the Lady Tors went on a 7-2 run for a 40-32 advantage entering the final frame.
Green once again got the Lady Mavs close with a steal and layup to cut the margin to 42-38, but that's as close as Ball High's defense would allow Manvel to get as the Lady Tors closed out the game with a 5-0 run for the 47-38 district win.
The Lady Tors out rebounded the Lady Mavs 34-24 was an important part of getting the win.
Green led the Lady Mavs with 15 points.
The Lady Mavs are a lock for the playoffs and stand 13-2 in district.
