Mavericks drop heartbreaker to Angleton 8-7

MANVEL — The Angleton Wildcats jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first inning and then had to hang on to get a walk off triple in their final at bats to pull out an 8-7 District 24-5A win over Manvel.

Trailing 6-0, Manvel gathered themselves to score three runs in the top of the second to close the gap to 6-3.

The Mavs then took the lead in the fifth frame when they scored four runs thanks to RBIs by Eric Benitez, Dillon Novak, and Riley Palomarez to grab a 7-6 lead.

The key to the four run fifth was when Benitez blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall after Tyler Labbe was hit by a pitch to get on base to begin the inning. The Mavs went on to score two more runs for their first lead of the game.

However, Angleton tied up the game 7-7 in their half of the fifth frame after getting a double and an RBI single.

Neither team scored in the sixth and Manvel was unable to push across a run in the top of the seventh setting up the game-winning triple by Angleton for the 8-7 district win.

Myles Simmons took the pitcher's mound to start the game for Manvel, but surrendered three hits and six runs before being removed with two outs in the first inning with Riley Palomarez taking over the pitching duties. Palomarez pitched 3.1 innings and surrendered one hit, one run while striking out one.

Dillon Novak took the hill in relief for 2.1 innings and gave up three hits, one run while fanning two to take the loss.

Benitez was 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs including a two-run homer. Novak was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Palomarez was1-for-3 with one RBI. Ladarius Owens was 1-for-2 with one RBI. Isaiah Walker was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
